Originally the matches were to be played at two World Cup venues, the first at Hambantota and the second and third at the R Premadasa Stadium. "At this point of time, there is no point in us being concerned about being unable to play at the World Cup venues," Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lanka captain, said.

"The World Cup venues for matches have been officially handed over to the ICC this month and ICC rules allow us to practice but not play until the World Cup starts," Thomas told AFP. The three ODIs will all be day games, though Hambantota and the renovated Premadasa Stadium in Colombo were earlier scheduled to host day-night matches during the series.

The ODIs were postponed to the end of FEBuary after rain had marred West Indies' Test series in Sri Lanka last year.

A proposal to bring England's next home series, in 2013, forward by a year was thwarted by the competing demands of the London Olympics. England's subsequent home Ashes summer is now expected to take place in 2015, a year earlier than the 2016 date originally proposed, with the traditional four-year home-and-away rotation expected to kick in from then on.

This series has been Pietersen's comeback into the one-day set-up after he was dropped against Pakistan in September, so he needed a productive series to reaffirm his credentials. England played seven batsmen in the previous match but that's unlikely to be a long-term solution heading into the World Cup, so no one can afford to lose their form at this juncture.

New Zealand lead the six-match series 1-0 after the second ODI in Queenstown was washed out on Wednesday.The Guptill-Jesse Ryder combination that was tried in the first ODI against Pakistan in Wellington is likely to be New Zealand's preferred combination for the World Cup. They put on 84 runs off 60 balls.

"The guy's [Ryder] a fantastic talent and hopefully he stays fit over the next couple of years so he can put some big numbers up for New Zealand. I love batting with Jesse. We give each other a bit of stick out there and just try to make batting as fun as we can."

However, Guptill, who signed to play for Derbyshire, will open with Jamie How in the third ODI against Pakistan on Saturday as a result of New Zealand's rotation policy for the series. "It's not really disruptive, there's a good feeling in the camp at the moment. We're just looking forward to getting some good weather and getting on to the park for these last four games, which are vital for us going into the World Cup."
